With civic engagement and democratic values inherent features of our Australian identity, we support initiatives that empower our youth to be the leaders of tomorrow.
Bankstown Poetry Slam
In recent years, we have been proud to support the Bankstown Poetry Slam (BPS), a not-for-profit community collective that was founded by Western Sydney Uni students Ahmad Al Rady and Sara Mansour in February of 2013. With the patronage of the Bankstown Youth Development Service (BYDS) at the Bankstown Arts Centre, BPS has become the first regular poetry slam in Western Sydney and gained national recognition as the largest regular slam in the country. BPS also runs workshops and holds performances in high schools to encourage self-expression through literature.
Whitlam Institute What Matters
We are a proud supporter of the Whitlam Institute's What Matters? Writing Competition. What Matters? is a 'catalyst for young thinkers and young writers to develop a perspective, a point of view, on where we're heading as a society'. Inspired by Gough Whitlam's commitment to involving young people in the shaping of Australia's future, participants respond to the simple question 'what matters?', encouraging student engagement with pertinent issues.
